TMJ is the joint that is located right next to the ear and anytime you open or close your mouth you might hear a small click or pop. This is due to a misalignment of the temporomandibular joint. This misalignment can cause jaw pain or lockjaw. If left untreated, it often gets worse over time. Luckily it can be fixed with chiropractic treatment.
The first step in treating temporomandibular joint dysfunction is assessing the joint itself. During the assessment, we check to make sure that the joint is opening evenly. If it is not opening evenly then we must decide if it’s being caused by a musculoskeletal component or if the joint is misaligned.
Once we have assessed the joint we can perform an adjustment by hand or with an activator. This process is painless and assists in realignment of the TMJ.
The severity of your TMJ dysfunction will dictate the length of your treatment plan, but most patients will see an improvement within a few treatments. This treatment method will alleviate jaw pain, lockjaw, and other TMJ symptoms.
